Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Canal World Heritage Site

This project aimed to upgrade an existing website that was no longer fit for purpose, re-imagining its layout, updating its content and creating additional learning pages that were engaging to all ages.

Website design and development, UX, project management, content management.

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is an iconic image for this part of North East Wales, but in fact the designated World Heritage Site area covers 11 miles of canal along with several other aqueducts, viaducts, canal basin, weir, pathways and bridges. The cultural significance of the whole site had been somewhat lost in the concentration on just the Pontcysyllte crossing.

This website was to be redesigned, and the content updated so that visitors would be made aware of the larger importance of the 11-mile site, its engineering feats and the many ways of enjoying the stretch of canal.

Additionally, the site was to become a repository of learning materials, interesting facts and online tours so that people could use the site as a source of information about the area’s history on a larger scale. The inclusion of a directory of objects, several packages of classroom resources, and a number of interactive tours along several parts of the Heritage Site has given the website a legacy as both a tourism and an educational hub.
