One Sunday morning in September, my friends and I took part in a lovely event organised by Chelsea of Loving life in wellies. Chelsea is a yoga instructor with a love of slow living. The morning was filled with some yoga stretches under a big old oak tree, picking our own wild flowers and creating our own jam jar arrangements, followed by some delicious Mug Run coffee from Rhyl and cake provided by Cacennau Sioned from Denbigh.
The event was hosted by Lucy Owens who took on Cae Derw in Llanrhaedr-Yng- Nghinmeirch in Denbighshire as a lockdown project in 2021. Lucy and her husband Sion both work and farm sheep but they were looking to diversify with something which would fit around their current work and also benefit their family. The have three children Betrys, Rolant and Cledwyn and they wanted somewhere the family could spend time together outside but also work with local producers to offer something unique for the area. From this the concept of Cae Derw was born with a little help from Farming Connect, they were able to grow, raspberries, a beautiful range of wild flowers and pumpkins in the stunning Vale of Clwyd. Lucy has a little pink pod on site which really does cause some shed envy, from which she serves the delicious Chantler tea and the locally sourced Mug Run coffee and Cakes, Betrys is also a very sweet and capable little helper taking drink and cake orders.
Following this year’s success, the Owens have plans to grow some Denbigh Plums to harvest next year.
So, if you fancy picking your own pumpkins for the Halloween season why not book on to their event on the 23 and 24th of October.
Hawarden Farm Shop in Flintshire also have some family activities planned for half term and you can pick your own pumpkins from their fields 7 days a week.
