Stay:
Spend the weekend within the stunning Gladstone Library which is located in Hawarden in Flintshire. With stunning architecture and the Food for Thought bistro this library is a real unique accommodation building (another suggested eatery is the Glynne Arms in Hawarden)
Day 1
Morning –
Visit the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (part of the 11 mile World Heritage Site). With the site being designated in 2019 the 11 mile World Heritage Site gives you a true insight into the beauty of the Dee Valley all the way onto the border with England.
Lunchtime –
Have a look around the stunning market town of Llangollen and visit the Llangollen Railway and learn about its history. Enjoy a small walk (or boat ride) on Llangollen Wharf and visit the Horseshoe Falls which starts the 11 mile World Heritage Site.
Eat at the Corn Mill or the Old Station Tearoom as these lie next to the powerful River Dee which separates the town.
Afternoon –
Visits to the areas most popular heritage sites is a must. With Plas Newydd, Chirk Castle and Valle Crucis Abbey you will be spoilt for choice as these sites are close to Llangollen.
Or for a more adventurous journey you could ride the Llangollen Steam Train down to Corwen and back and experience the beauty of the Dee Valley.
Day 2
Morning –
Take a northern drive from Hawarden to St Winefride’s Well at Holywell and bathe or drink from fresh holy water. Then it’s off to the beach at Talacre for a peaceful walk through the sand dunes and a photo with the picturesque lighthouse. Carry on down the coastal path to reach the seaside towns of Rhyl and Prestatyn.
Drive inland to reach the market town of Ruthin.
Lunchtime –
You’ll be spoiled for choice in Ruthin, as it is full of restaurants and cafes to experience well-known food chain or discover local cafes.
Ruthin is a great North Wales town for things to do as well, with the Pentonville Prison of Ruthin Gaol being open to the public and is a must see and couple with Nantclwyd y Dre you can really have a trip through time and experience history set in a quaint town.
For a art lovers, there is Ruthin Craft Centre which hosts many works from local artists and with the Cafe R adjoined to the building then it is a great place to finish your adventure with a cup of tea and cake.
Afternoon –
To end your weekend it is best to make time for the things you couldn’t do the previous day. Whether this is seeing the heritage sites you missed of Plas Newydd, Chirk Castle or Valle Crucis Abbey or explore more of the coast at Rhyl and Prestatyn.
If you are visiting North East Wales without a car, we’d suggest basing yourself at Llangollen, as there are is a lot to see in and around the town
